ACMC Allergist expands hours to ease patient congestion

Dr. Chouksey expands service to Jefferson

Northeast Ohio’s premiere Allergist/Immunologist Akhil Chouksey, MD, is expanding his office hours at Ashtabula County Medical Center and will soon begin seeing patients at Jefferson Family Health Center.

This gives patients more access to Dr. Chouksey’s expertise in treating allergies and immune system disorders.

“When I joined ACMC last year, I quickly found a great need for allergy treatment and immunology here. There is a high rate of cancer and other illnesses which can be directly attributed to a poor immune system. In addition, local residents suffer from an array of allergies, which can be alleviated with the proper treatment,” Dr. Chouksey said.

Dr. Chouksey’s office is now open Mondays from 9 a.m. to 8  p.m.; Tuesday 8 a.m. to 12 a.m. and Thursdays 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

He also sees patients in Jefferson every other Tuesday from 8 a.m. to noon.

ACMC Healthcare System President & CEO Michael Habowski said, “The addition of Dr. Chouksey to ACMC’s medical staff is having a positive impact on Ashtabula County, and the expansion of hours after only six months shows how much our communities needed his expertise. Our goal is to provide access to healthcare right here so Ashtabula Countians don’t have to leave town.”

Since allergy treatment can include weekly allergy shots, having local access means less time away from work or family, and less expense for patients who no longer have to travel outside the county for treatment.

Prior to joining ACMC, Dr. Chouksey was the Director of Allergy and Immunology at a major teaching hospital in Cleveland.

He treats children and adults in Ashtabula, Lake and Geauga counties who suffer from:

  • Asthma
  • Allergic rhinitis
  • Anaphylaxis (life-threatening reactions)
  • Eczema
  • Chronic sinusitis
  • Drug allergies
  • Food allergy
  • Insect allergy (bee sting, fire ants)
  • Latex allergy
  • Primary immune deficiencies

“I often find that a patient comes in for specific symptoms they think may be related to an allergy. In reality these are symptoms that are masking another type of illness, such as asthma or eczema. I will work with every patient to develop a personalized treatment plan that eases their symptoms while focusing on the core health problems that caused those symptoms,” Dr. Chouksey said.

For example, a person who has a latex allergy can also have an adverse reaction to bananas, kiwis, avocadoes and chestnuts

Because of the individual reaction between allergens and our bodies, Dr. Chouksey looks at a patients’ overall health, beyond just the symptoms.

“Most people know smoking, exercise and nutrition all play a role in the quality of their health. But, they are amazed when we talk about a possible connection between obesity and asthma, or that a poor diet affects the immune system,” he said. “That is why I look at how your body responds to these allergens or immune system deficiencies.”

Dr. Chouksey is Board Certified for allergy and immunology, and is a Fellow of the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology.
