Since 2009, Cleveland Clinic Cardiologist Thomas Edwards, MD, has offered a monthly specialty clinic at Ashtabula County Medical Center. Dr. Edwards’ cares for children who suffer from various disorders of the heart, including: valve disease, palpitations, murmurs, defects, stenosis and more.
ACMC’s Pediatric Team recognized an increasing number of patients with diseases of the endocrine system, and they knew just where to turn: Cleveland Clinic Children’s, the only hospital in Northeast Ohio that is ranked in 10 out of 10 specialties in U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Children’s Hospitals 2015-16.” The rankings are based on quality, safety, care and reputation. Beginning in March 2016, two Cleveland Clinic Children’s Pediatric Endocrinologists will see patients at Ashtabula County Medical Center to make it easier for our youngest patients to receive the care they need.
Endocrinology is the branch of medicine that deals with the endocrine system (primarily the pituitary, pancreas, thyroid and adrenal glands) and conditions related to hormones. A Pediatric Endocrinologist focuses on these conditions in children. Common conditions treated include:
- Juvenile and Type 2 diabetes
- Growth disorders
- Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar)
- Menstrual problems and polycystic ovarian syndrome
- Puberty – early or late
Because many of these conditions are life-long, Endocrinologists care for the person not just the disease. They offer diagnostic evaluation of symptoms and provide solutions for long-term management of the condition.
The Cleveland Clinic Children’s Pediatric Endocrinologists at ACMC are Dr. Laurie Tsilianidis and Dr. Sumana Narasimhan. Both are board certified in Pediatric Endocrinology and bring a combined 15 years of experience to serve the needs of children in Ashtabula County.
